Birthdays between invitation and application

IRCC's 2017 public policy on age-based requirements lets officers exempt Federal Skilled Worker applicants from the age-points provisions if they lose points because their birthday fell after the invitation to apply and before IRCC received their application. All other requirements still apply.

Frequently asked questions

At what age do you get the most CRS points?

From 20 to 29. You get 110 points without a spouse, or 100 if your spouse or partner is coming with you. At 30 you lose 5 points, and the points keep falling every year until they reach 0 at 45.

How many CRS points do I lose each year after 30?

Between 5 and 11 points a year without a spouse. The drops get bigger with age - from 40 to 44 you lose 11 points every birthday. With a spouse coming, the drops are 5 to 10 points.

Can I still apply for Express Entry after 45?

Yes. There is no maximum age for Express Entry. You just get 0 CRS age points, so you need more points from language, work experience, education, French or a provincial nomination. A nomination adds 600 points.

Does my CRS score change automatically on my birthday?

Your Express Entry profile uses your date of birth, so your score is worked out with your current age. Check your profile after your birthday to see your updated score.

What if my birthday comes after I get an invitation to apply?

For the Federal Skilled Worker 67-point grid, IRCC has a public policy (2017) that lets officers exempt applicants who lose age points because their birthday fell between the invitation and the date their application was received. Check the policy on canada.ca for the exact conditions.

Do age points differ with a spouse?

Yes. If your spouse or common-law partner is coming with you and isn't a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, the age maximum is 100 instead of 110, because some points move to your spouse's factors.
